SUMMARY:Field Day 2024
DESCRIPTION:Members of the Eastern Panhandle Amateur Radio Club will be participating in the national amateur radio Field Day exercise\, June 22 – 23 at Blue Ridge Community and Technical College 13650 Apple Harvest Dr\, Martinsburg\, WV. Since 1933\, ham radio operators across North America have established temporary ham radio stations in public locations during Field Day to showcase the science and skill of amateur radio. This event is open to the public and all are encouraged to attend.  \nField Day is a showcase for how amateur radio works reliably under any conditions from almost any location to create an independent communications network. “Ham radio functions completely independent of the Internet or cell phone infrastructure\, can interface with laptops or smartphones\, and can be set up almost anywhere in minutes. That’s the beauty of amateur radio during a communications outage\,” says Bob Inderbitzen\, NQ1R\, spokesperson for ARRL The national association for Amateur Radio®\, (www.arrl.org)\, which represents amateur (or “ham”) radio operators across the country. “In today’s electronic do-it-yourself (DIY) environment\, ham radio remains one of the best ways for people to learn about electronics\, physics\, meteorology\, and numerous other scientific disciplines\, and is a huge asset to any community during disasters or emergencies if the standard communication infrastructure goes down\,” Inderbitzen adds. Anyone may become a licensed amateur radio operator. There are more than 750\,000 licensed hams in the United States of all ages. And with clubs such as EPARC\, it’s easy for anybody to get involved right here in Berkeley County\, WV.  \nInterested in getting tested for your ham radio license or upgrading your class? The EPARC VE team will be conducting an exam session before field day: Click here for details \nPlease revisit this page as we will post updated information as it becomes available.

SUMMARY:VE Test Session - Field Day 2024
DESCRIPTION:We will be administering VE Test session for new and upgraded amateur radio licenses administered under the Laurel VEC. Exam sessions given under this VEC are free of cost. Please see below for additional details of the test session. \nGet an FRN Number from the FCC\nWe test under the Laurel VEC which doesn’t charge an examination fee (ARRL VEC and others do). On the FCC side of things\, Ham Radio licenses used to be no charge…but the FCC recently changed that in 2022. They now charge a fee ($35) on their side. To streamline the process\, the FCC requires new applicants to pre-register via the FCC’s COmmission REgistration System (CORES)\, to obtain an FRN\, and it requires applicants to use their FRNs when filing Form 605 at the exam session. The FRN uniquely identifies an applicant in all transactions with the FCC. As of Spring of 2022\, use of Social Security Numbers on Form 605 is no longer permitted. \nNote that if you are upgrading to a higher amateur radio class from an existing class or have other/previous licensing with the FCC\, such as a GMRS license\, then you should already have a FRN Number. Be sure to locate that and bring it with you for your exam session. \n \nTaking the Exam and What to Bring\nWhat to Bring\n\nYour FCC issued FRN Number (see the section above).\nOne legal photo ID (identification):\n\nState Driver’s License\nGovernment issued Passport\nMilitary or Law Enforcement Officer Photo ID card\nStudent School Photo ID card\nState Photo ID card\n\n\nIf no photo ID is available\, two forms of identification:\n\nNon-photo State ID card (some states still have them)\nBirth certificate (must have the appropriate seal)\nSocial security card\nEmployer’s wage statement or Minor’s work permit\nSchool ID card\nSchool or Public Library card\nUtility bill\, bank statement or other business correspondence that specifically names the person; or a postmarked envelope addressed to the person at his or her current mailing address as it appears on the Form 605.\n\n\nStudents/minors without a photo ID need to bring only one of the above items if a legal guardian presents their photo ID; otherwise two non-photo IDs are required. Minor children (under the age of 18) may be accompanied in the room by an adult during the test.\nFor those upgrading license classes\, bring a printed copy of your Amateur Radio license or be able to show proof of the license in the official FCC database. The original(s) and photocopy(s) of any Certificates of Successful Completion of Examination (CSCE) you may hold from previous exam sessions. If your license has already been issued by the FCC\, the CSCE showing license credit is not needed.\nTwo number two pencils with erasers and a pen for in-person sessions.\nOPTIONAL: A calculator with the memory erased and formulas cleared is allowed. Slide rules and logarithmic tables are acceptable\, as long as they’re free of notes and formulas. In addition\, iPhones\, iPads\, Androids\, smartphones\, Blackberry devices and all similar electronic devices with a calculator capability\, may NOT be used as a calculator.\nA positive attitude and some patience. The folks administering the exams are dedicated volunteers. They will do their best to get you tested\, your exam graded\, inform you of the results\, and if applicable\, prepare and present to you a certificate stating you have earned a license or an upgrade as quickly as possible.\n\nWhat is not allowed\n\nYou may not bring any written notes or calculations into the exam session.\nCell phones must be silenced or turned off during the exam session and put away. The phones’ calculator function may not be used.\nSmart watches or any type of “smart” accessories must be removed and put away. \nPlease do not bring food or drinks in the exam session. Bottled water is acceptable.\nYou may not leave the exam session to go to the bathroom once your test is underway. Please use the restroom before your exam session. If you are testing for multiple elements\, you may be permitted to go to the bathroom between element exam sessions.\n\nAfter the Exam – Pay the FCC\nAfter a user passes their exam and it’s been filed with the FCC\, they will have a 10-day window to log in and pay the FCC the $35 fee.

SUMMARY:Field Day 2021
DESCRIPTION:Please revisit this page as we will post updated information as it becomes available.\nAs tradition\, EPARC plans to participate in the 2021 ARRL Field Day. In 2020 we were unable to have our in person field day; however\, we plan to conduct an in person event this year. Field Day is ham radio’s open house. Every June\, more than 40\,000 hams throughout North America set up temporary transmitting stations in public places to demonstrate ham radio’s science\, skill and service to our communities and our nation. It combines public service\, emergency preparedness\, community outreach\, and technical skills all in a single event. Field Day has been an annual event since 1933\, and remains the most popular event in ham radio. \n\nField Day Location\nThe EPARC will be hosting field day for our third time at the Bendington Ruritan Club on Route 11 between Martinsburg and Falling Waters. All are welcome to attend and it’s a great way for someone to get their feet wet in Amateur Radio with a guiding hand. \nBendington Ruritan Club\n3947 Williamsport Pike\nMartinsburg\, WV 25404\nGet Directions \n\nSetup (Friday & Saturday)\nWe will be setting up our tent and antennas this Friday after 2PM. Plus if anyone has any suggestions\, please feel free to let us all know and we will take it into consideration. \n\nBendington Ruritan Club’s Chicken BBQ (Saturday – Lunchtime)\nThe Ruritan Club will be having their chicken BBQ on Saturday prior to the contest officially starring. It would be a great opportunity to grab some lunch and support our host. Plan to be early as I am told that they typically be sold out by Noon-1 PM. The first chicken off the grill will be between 9:30 AM and 10 AM. Half Chicken\, roll\, butter and a drink is $7.00. The meal (half chicken\, cole slaw\, baked beans\, roll\, butter and a drink) is priced at $9.00. \n\nContest Operation Times (Saturday-Sunday)\nWe plan to operate as a 2A class again with two stations. We will be running 2 Yaesu FT-450Ds and logging with N3JFP software and operating primarily on emergency power. At least one station should be setup to get 6 meter contacts as well as have the ability to work some digital modes when phone operations slow down. \nField day for our setup will allow us to operate from 2PM (EST) on Saturday until 2PM (EST) on Sunday for a total of 24 hours. \nThe object of Field Day is to work as many stations as possible on the 160\, 80\, 40\, 20\, 15 and 10 Meter HF bands\, as well as all bands 50 MHz and above (with what our setup and antennas will allow)\, and in doing so to learn to operate in abnormal situations in less than optimal conditions. A premium is placed on developing skills to meet the challenges of emergency preparedness as well as to acquaint the general public with the capabilities of amateur radio. \nFor more details on the field day rules visit the ARRL’s website: http://www.arrl.org/field-day-rules \nWe will need persons to man the stations for the entirety of the 24 hours. \n\nNo “Official” Saturday Evening Dinner\nIt’s has been tradition in past years to prepare a group dinner on Saturday evenings. Unfortunately with limited resources this year as well as looming sanitary concerns\, we have no plans of having a preplanned meal this year. We may opt to order take out of some sort. This will be decided closer dinner time when we can gauge how many individuals will be present at dinner time. \nDrinks are bring your own/share. We plan to have a “kitchen” tent setup as before where coolers can be left and we will have a microwave available for heating food and a coffee station. \n\nTear Down (Sunday)\nTear down will commence following the completion of the contest on Sunday (after 2:00pm). If you are able to stay or return\, any help would be greatly appreciated. Many hands make light work. \n\nNo VE Test Session This Year\nIn years past we’ve administered VE Test sessions for new and upgrading amateur radio licenses. Unfortunately\, we will not be able to do so this year mainly because of lack of the proper number of VE examiners required. Also\, the FCC has changed licensing requirements recently and will begin charing for new licenses and upgraded licenses. Hopefully when we resume testing we will have a better handle on what the process will be for these new changes. \n\nNot able to attend\, but plan to work from home?\nWhile we want to see things back to normal\, we understand that there are still some who cannot attend EPARC’s field day for varying reasons. For 2021\, you may still be able to help with the ARRL’s temporary rule waiver that is carried over from last year. The ARRL states that an aggregate club score will be published. \nThe temporary rule waiver states that for Field Day 2021\, an aggregate club score will also be published\, which will be the sum of all individual entries indicating a specific club (similar to the aggregate score totals used in ARRL affiliated club competitions). Ordinarily\, club names are only published in the results for Class A and Class F entries\, but the temporary rule waiver for 2021 allows participants from any Class to optionally include a single club name with their submitted results following Field Day. \nIf you are able\, we’d like to see you at Field day. If you are unable to attend at all and would like to contribute from home or mobile\, you can do so by operating under your own callsign\, but when you submit your score to the ARRL you can also include the club as part of our overall aggregate score. \nWe will be reporting to the club name “EASTERN PANHANDLE ARC” which is exactly how it is displayed under the ARRL?s directory. Just to clarify\, you would be working under your own callsign and not K8EP. Just communicate with use before reporting so that we are aware and can answer any questions. \n\nHope to see you all there and have an excellent time of fellowship and fun on the air. Join us if you can!

Field Day is open to all amateurs in the areas covered by the ARRL/RAC Field Organizations and countries within IARU Region 2. DX stations residing in other regions may be contacted for credit\, but are not eligible to submit entries. \nField Day is always the fourth full weekend of June\, beginning at 1800 UTC Saturday and running through 2059 UTC Sunday.
